What I wish I had said…

I showed this clip from Jimmy Kimmel during my most recent sermon. I set it up by saying that as I watched this particular section, after the LOST finale,  I began screaming, “No, no, no!” at my television. The reason for my outburst was because it so misrepresented the essence of Christianity. Kimmel was right about other religions, but wrong about Christianity. Christianity is the one religion that says you can’t “pass the test.” You can’t do enough to “earn” heaven. I think I had a bit of righteous indignation at the false statement.

However, I wish I had added something to my comments on Sunday morning…I wish I had also said that this misrepresentation may be an indictment, not against Jimmy Kimmel, but against us Christians. Perhaps Kimmel rightly spoke about what he has experienced from Christians – that it is about earning your way or passing the proverbial test of life. I don’t know for sure, but it makes me wonder. If nothing else, this clip reminds me of the constant need for the Church, the followers of Jesus, to make sure we are righty communicating that Christianity is ultimately about Jesus passing the test in our place.
